It may be tempting to just grab a chair to get a little extra height when reaching for something just out of reach, but resist the temptation: falls from chairs and tables account for many injuries every year, and can be fatal. Chairs aren’t designed to be stood upon. Their geometry is most stable when you’re sitting in them. Instead, opt for a stepladder or stepstool. A nice taller stepladder gives you lots of reach, but folds up to be easy to stow. When setting it up, make sure the ladder is level, and all four feet are on stable ground. Sometimes a full stepladder is inconvenient. A small folding stepstool folds up even smaller, and can be left tucked away in closets or cabinets and grabbed when a little boost is needed. If you find yourself really stretching, however, opt for the full stepladder. Don’t overextend, and keep your shoulders centered over the stool or ladder.
